Palliative care can be offered in variety of places; some countries focus on in-patient palliative care while others like United States of America have greater emphasis on palliative care in home. However, Palliative care generally takes place in any setting including hospitals, homes, hospices and pain clinics (Doyle, Hanks and Mc Donald, 1994).

Some hospitals have special units for palliative care while others mapped out certain numbers of beds in different units for people who need palliative care. Some patients prefer hospitals that employ specialists in palliative care services while one prefer long term facilities.

Long – term facilities such as nursing homes, hospices also offer palliative care services. In Canada, there are only a few residential hospices, separate building or apartments in the communities where palliative care is provided in home – like settings which offer 24 hours services.

Thus, most people prefer palliative care services to be rendered in their homes. This is partly because patients feel they have more freedom in words and commitment through resources and actions. The traditional extended family system in Africa where support is usually provided is gradually being lost to western civilization, the resultant effect of this is neglect of terminally ill-patients. Cases have been witnessed where patients with terminal illness died in agony either as a result of pain and other distressing symptoms, neglect by the care givers and total abandonment by their families. The study seeks the reasons for such. Is it lack of knowledge or negative attitudes on part of care givers such as nurses?
