Lassa Fever is a Viral Haemorrhagic Fever with a gradual onset.

CAUSE:

1. Arena (Lassa) Virus carried by Mastomy’s Natalensis Rat species.


MODE OF TRANSMISSION:

• Direct contact with Rat Urine, Faeces & saliva.
• Ingestion of contaminated foods
• Touching of contaminated objects
• Direct contact with infected Human blood, urine and semen.
• Through skin break/mucous membrane
• Aerosol and Dust borne particles.

INCUBATION PERIOD:
6 – 24 Days, but most patients display symptoms from the 4th – 5th Day.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF LASSA FEVER.
• Fever
• Nausea
• Cough
• Headache
• Severe fatigue
• Muscle pain
• Chest pain
• Abdominal pain


PREVENTION/CONTROL OF LASSA FEVER.

• Environmental sanitation through clearing of Bushes.
• Proper hand washing after all procedures on infected patients.
• Proper storage and covering of food items to prevent contact with Rodents.
• Early report of Fever of unknown origin to the Hospital.
• Immediate Notification of the appropriate Health Authority about Lassa fever
in Endemic Area.
• Barrier Nursing/Isolation of patients suspected of Lassa – Fever in Hospitals.
• All Laboratory Investigation carried out on specimens of infected patients
should be handled by Experts to ensure proper disposal.
• Observing personal Hygiene.
• Proper cooking of food and covering of Drinking water.
• Village Heads, Town Leaders & the Government should promulgate laws
to stop people from eating Rats.
• Use of universal precautions on all procedures carried out on infected
patients.


COMPLICATIONS OF LASSA FEVER.

• Deafness.
• Encephalopathy with Seizure.
• Spontaneous Abortion.
• Death.



TREATMENT OF LASSA FEVER

1. CHEMOTHERAPY
• Ribavirin (Anti – Viral Drug).
• Symptomatic treatment.

2. SUPPORTIVE THERAPY
• Adequate Diet and liberal fluids intake.
• Proper oxygenation.
• Control Blood pressure.
• Blood Transfusion.
• Maintenance of Appropriate fluid and Electrolyte balance.
